We quarry 3 reef-origin quarries (urgonian facies) within the Arudy marble basin (Atlantic Pyrenees department). The stone that is quarried is said to be organogenic compact limestone gorgonians, algae or rudistes (lower cretaceous, Barremian level).
The marble qualities of these reefs have been known since the Antiquity. We can find several types of marble limestones there. The names given at the end of the 19th century suggest the production sites. Paloma or Sainte Anne allow rapid and accurate identification of the material as French Pyrenean stone.
